Hold on your breath guys. The immaculate security which bestowed the title of “un-breakable” upon Sony Playstation 3 has been taken down, apparently. It has been over three years since the PS3 was launched and none of the “haxorz” were able to break into the system. But now, George Hotz aka “Geohot” (the guy who hacked Apple’s iPhone) claims that he has hacked into the Playstation 3 system.
On his blog, Geohot writes:
I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1.
Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.
He is not making the hack public as of yet as there is a lot of work to be done, still and making the hack public would make Sony release patches which could make the implementation of the hack difficult.
As far as the exploit goes, I’m not revealing it yet. The theory isn’t really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can’t post dumps. I’m hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone’s KBAG.
This is significant as this could make huge things possible and make the already powerful console even more powerful. The possibilities are endless and would also probably lead to pirated Sony Playstation 3 games, which were not a reality, until now.
PS3 isn’t un-breakable after all! I am sure Sony is watching this very very closely.
