sony playstation 3 300x240 PS3 exploit releasedA few days ago, George Hotz aka Geohot claimed to have hacked the Sony’s PlayStation 3 console. Now he has released the exploit he discovered and has released it in hope of giving a boost to the PS3 scene. On his blog he writes:

In the interest of openness, I’ve decided to release the exploit. Hopefully, this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organize and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released. I have a life to get back to and can’t keep working on this all day and night.

He calls on the devs to work on the hack and see what all they can achieve for the PS3 community.

He confirms the exploit works on firmware v 2.4.2 but also writes that he expects it to run on all current versions.

You can download the exploit from here. (Mirror)

How Sony counters this threat, remains to be seen.

sony playstation 3 300x240 Sony PS3 hacked?Hold on your breath guys. The immaculate security which bestowed the title of “un-breakable” upon Sony Playstation 3 has been taken down, apparently. It has been over three years since the PS3 was launched and none of the “haxorz” were able to break into the system. But now, George Hotz aka “Geohot” (the guy who hacked Apple’s iPhone) claims that he has hacked into the Playstation 3 system.

On his blog, Geohot writes:

I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1.

Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.

He is not making the hack public as of yet as there is a lot of work to be done, still and making the hack public would make Sony release patches which could make the implementation of the hack difficult. [Read more...]
